Finding her voice has been a long process of learning how to be honest for Madi Diaz, first with herself and then the rest of us.

In the wake of heartbreak and the ensuing journey of self-discovery, Madi has built a body of work that feels less like performance and more like confession. As the Grammy-nominated artist describes it, songwriting has become an act of spiritual excavation. There’s no armor in the way or pretense at work.

Madi’s latest album, Fatal Optimist, pushes that even further, a beautiful collection of songs about holding on when faith feels thin, about finding small reasons to believe in something good after everything is falling apart. It might not feel that way to her. Still, Madi’s bravery is not only connective but contagious—her obedience to consistently show up, even when it hurts, and to document the pitfalls and progress of that path.
